What Does The World’s Oldest Person Ate Every Day?

Emma Morano was a 117-year-old lady who passed away in April 2017. She was the last living human born in the 1800s who managed to share her story. She passed away peacefully at her home in Italy.

But how was she able to stay healthy for such a long time? Emma told the world that she loved eating eggs. She even claimed that her secret to a long life was eggs. In fact, she ate more than 100,000 eggs in her entire lifetime.

Here is her story.

Emma Morano’s Story

Emma was born in 1899, November 29 in Italy. She was the world’s oldest woman and the last known person born in the 19th century. Furthermore, she claimed that she lived a long life because she ate cookies and eggs every day.

But, rarely any vegetables or fruits. Her statement might seem controversial, but it is true. She outlived her eight siblings but didn’t manage to outlive Jeanne Calment who was 122 years old.

Even though she didn’t celebrate her birthday, she welcomed any well-wishers who would come to visit her.

She told the news that many people from all over the world, from America, Turin, Milan, Switzerland, Austria came to visit her and listen to her story. In her early years, Ms. Morano had an only son who passed away in infancy.

Shortly after that terrible event, in 1938 she left her violent husband. Since then, she lived alone and worked in a factory for manufacturing jute sacks to make a living. Moreover, she loved her independence.

Even though she didn’t leave her small apartment for 20 years, having been bed-bound during her last year, she took pride in her independence. With age, she had to face many difficulties. She had trouble speaking, watching television, and was almost deaf.

However, her mind remained active and alert. As a result, she spent her time snacking or sleeping. Her doctor claims that she lived a long life mainly because of genetics. Her mother was 91 when she passed away, and her sisters lived to be older than 100.

But, her daily routine is what gave her strength and also took a huge part in her longevity, said the doctor.

Why Eggs?

Her egg eating habit dates back to the 1900s, more precisely 1910. Because of the aftermath of world war one, Emma was diagnosed with anemia. She had a deficiency of the red blood cells in her body. As a result, she had to follow a certain diet.

After eating eggs, she realized that her body felt immensely healthier and she stuck to her habit. Here is a more detailed description of her morning diet.

Morano’s diet included:

  • Three eggs per day (one raw)
  • cookies
  • a glass of homemade brandy in the morning
  • no drugs
