How to Stop Absorbing People’s Negative Energy
The capability to feel compassion toward people is named sympathy (1). But, being an empath is more than that (2). It means that besides recognizing emotions in people, also we feel them as if they were ours.
People who are strong empathizers absorb a lot of pain and suffering from the surroundings. Because of that, people get emotionally down, and they cannot function well.
Being in a room with a highly negative person may make them feel their emotions very much. You may feel their heaviness onto you, so you may have difficulties in staying strong.
So, you need to learn how to deal with this kind of negative energy since your emotions affect your overall health. (3)
How to Stop Absorbing Negative Energy
1. You Are Responsible for Yourself
The only one who can say anything about your feelings is you. You are the only one who is able to let yourself get influenced by thoughts and emotions. Also, if anything bothers you or interferes with your happiness, you can fix it. (4)
The perception you have of yourself is the one that matters, not other’s views. Although, it is up to you if you want to exchange the power you have for other people’s approval.
When you choose to be aware of your own feelings, other cannot influence you. Having enough self-confidence and knowing yourself makes it harder for others to have a negative impact on your life.
2. Stop Pleasing Everyone
Never take it personally when someone is talking bad things about you, gossiping, or trying to make you sad. Also, you should not try to make them better.
If you do so, it will get you into a bigger field of negativity, and your energy and emotions will depend on them. It is okay for others not to like you. You need to learn how to be compassionate towards yourself.
Each of us has distinct personalities, likes, and dislikes. So, these differences make us unique. Showing love to yourself will protect you exhaustion.
3. Learn How to Say ‘No’
Generosity is a great trait. However, you need to be careful for you and your generosity not to be taken for granted. Do not accept naysayers, freeloaders, or emotional vampires. You need to set boundaries.
Since this is your life, your body, personal time, and space are of big significance to you. So, you need to be careful of what kind of people you have in your life. Saying ‘no’ when you need to is totally fine.
Before giving other people a place in your life, you need to set some standards.
4. Do Not Feed the Beast
We have already mentioned the term “emotional vampire.” But, what does it mean? These people possess parasitic personalities that would actually feed on your affection and attention and exhaust you.
In the beginning, investing emotionally in this kind of people may seem good, but after a while, you will be weakened, and their issues will remain unsolved. If these people decide to stay victims, your love will never be enough.
Of course, you should provide help and support to people who need it. But, you need to remember that if you give them a lot of attention, they will not find any solutions.
After all, you are not the one who should solve everyone’s problems, especially if they do not want their problems to be solved. Some people just like to be pitied. You should know when to walk away.
When you feel like you are getting tired, show them sympathy and leave. It is not evil to reject being part of other people’s drama.
5. Get Back to Nature
There are times when you just need to take a break from everyone. Since their energies can bring you down, you should take a weekend, a day, or at least an hour for your own. You should go to some peaceful place.
Staying in nature helps you be calmer by replacing the modern world chatter with peacefulness. Pay attention to the natural world, the plants, the animals, and earth. Take deep breaths and meditate.
Put your focus on getting fresh air and lift up your spirit. This way, when you get back to your life, you will feel better, calmer, and refreshed. Also, you will not absorb negative energy that easy.
Be courageous and learn how to control the positivity in your life. Keep people who make you feel better, and do things that improve your energy. Learn to love yourself so you would be able to say ‘no,’ and leave when you feel you need to.
Finally, the most important thing is to remember that you are the one responsible for your life.
