How to Help Someone With Anxiety Attacks
Anxiety comes in different levels, and every person deals with it in their own way. It is difficult for many people to understand what an anxious person goes through every day. They often confuse nervousness with anxiety.
They think that the anxiety will simply go away in time. But, that is not true. When someone is having anxiety attacks, they will need a full day to recover from it. Also, there are different types of anxiety.
The most common type of anxiety is social anxiety. It affects a person’s mental health which is why many people need help dealing with this type of anxiety. Here is how you can help someone with anxiety attacks.
1. Know Their Triggers
It is important that you completely understand their trigger/s. It is crucial that you never take them lightly.
For people who suffer from anxiety, certain things can be their trigger like, loud, overcrowded events, stress, romantic or friendly problems in their relationship, the weather, etc.
If your partner has a certain trigger, make sure that you are there for them when they need you the most.
2. Give Them a Hug
To an anxious person hugs sometimes mean more than life. It makes them feel safe knowing that they are not alone. This is a huge part of their life, knowing that someone is there for them and lets them know it will be OK.
3. Listen To Them
It is important that you listen to what they have to say. A person with anxiety needs someone who will care to listen. Don’t just force your opinion unless they ask for it. Don’t chat on your phone, don’t be on the tablet, just listen. Show them that you care.
4. Can I Touch You?
Before you embrace them, make sure that you ask first. Some people who experience anxiety attacks don’t want to be touched. But, if they let you in their own bubble, you should definitely grab their hands.
Let them know it will be alright. But, if your partner doesn’t want to be touched, you should give them space to gather their thoughts.
5. Know Their Coping Mechanism
Everyone deals with anxiety attacks differently. Some listen to music, others paint, watch TV or something else. This gives them comfort and relaxes them. What you should do is let them relax.
Let them do whatever they want to do in order to find peace.
6. Know Their Safe Words
Socially anxious people can’t deal with judgmental and pushy people. Being surrounded by such people makes them incredibly negative. So, to get out of a certain situation, anxious people may use safe worlds or actions to show you they need help.
For example, they may give you a sign, grab your hand, shoulder, elbow, or say to the person bothering them ‘’Do you need something from me?’’. If you recognize the signs, you can get them out of this particular situation fast.
7. Be Friendly With Them
Socially anxious people want to have a true friend. They like to go to meals with the people they care about. So, it is a good idea to be nice to them and take it slowly. Don’t just ask them countless questions.
If you are too pushy, they will avoid you. So, it is important that you take it slowly and carefully not to hurt anyone who is socially anxious. If you think you have anxiety and don’t know how to deal with it, we recommend that you visit a professional.
Ask for their advice and make sure not to give up the sessions. It may seem difficult or time-consuming, but in the end, it will be absolutely worth it.
