Exterminator Reveals How to Never See Ants in Our Home Again

4 Ways to Get Rid of Ants and Keep Them Out of Your House

Ever see ants on the kitchen countertop or floor? No matter how harmless and social insects are, no one likes seeing them inside their home. They can damage our property and plants, and even get into our food.

The most common types of ants which invade houses are carpenter, pavement, pharaoh, acrobat, and odorous house ants.

Dealing with these insects can be nerve-wracking. A lot of commercial pesticides are full of chemicals which are harmful to people and the environment.

So, instead of using them and risking to harm your family members, plants, and pets, try dealing with ants using only natural ingredients. Even though choosing the natural way may take more time to show results, it’s toxin-free and effective.

How to Keep Ants Away from Your Home

These insects love sugary foods and have a strong sense of smell. Therefore, don’t leave any food in the cupboards or kitchen countertop, unless it’s protected.

They can even smell the sugar left on an empty can of soda, so make sure you wash similar containers before throwing them in the trash.

How to Remove Ants from Your House

Instead of buying expensive and chemical-laden pesticides, use some of the following natural ingredients to remove ants from your house.

1. Cinnamon

House-invading ants hate the scent of cinnamon. Here’s how to use it to get rid of ants.

Things You Need

  • A cup of water
  • Half a teaspoon of cinnamon essential oil
  • Cloth or cotton balls
  • Cinnamon cloves (optional)

Instructions

Add the essential oil in the water and stir. Then, soak the cloth or cotton ball in the solution and use it to wipe the areas where you see ants more often. Don’t forget the kitchen countertops. Do this procedure once a day until you see no ant in your home.

If you have cinnamon cloves, you can leave them near windows and doors to keep them away from your house.

2. Vinegar

These social insects hate the smell of vinegar. So, be smart and use this inexpensive ingredient to eliminate them from your home.

Things You Need

  • A few drops of Lemon essential oil
  • Water
  • Distilled vinegar
  • Spray bottle

Instructions

Mix distilled vinegar and water in 1:1 ratio in a spray bottle. Then just add the lemon oil and shake the bottle. Spray around places you expect to see ants, but don’t forget to shake the spray bottle before each use. Do this every day until there’s no ant in your house.

3. Borax

This method works by attracting the ants and killing them. They will take the food you’ll prepare for them back to their nest and share with the rest of the ants. In that way, you’ll kill most of the ants hiding in your home.

Things You Need

  • borax – 1 teaspoon
  • peanut butter – 2 tablespoons
  • water – 1 teaspoon
  • sugar – 2 tablespoons
  • Sharp object
  • Plastic container with lid

Instructions

Put the sugar, borax, peanut butter, and water in the container and mix well. Then, cover with the lid and poke it with the sharp object. Besides the lid, make several holes on the sides of the container as well.

In this way, you will prevent your kids and pets from having contact with the borax. Only ants would be able to enter and leave the container through the small holes.

4. Peppermint

Ants can’t stand the strong peppermint smell, as it prevents them from detecting other smells from foods.

Pour one cup of water in a spray bottle and add ten drops of peppermint oil. Shake well, and spray on places where you expect to see them. Do this twice a day until all ants are gone.

Another option is to use dried peppermint. Sprinkle it around entryways, doors, and garbage areas to keep ants away.

A more long-term solution would be to grow peppermint plants in and around your house, especially in your kitchen and garden.
